Celebrating 100 years since Richard Burton’s birth
Posted in Richard Burton
On 8 November 2025, Pontrhydyfen marked the centenary of the birth of Richard Burton, the legendary Hollywood actor born in Danybont.
Burton’s remarkable career brought international fame, but his roots in the Afan Valley continued to sprinkle glitz and glamour across the community even a century later.
The commemorations began in the morning with the unveiling of a blue plaque in Taibach to honour Burton’s mentor, Philip Burton, the teacher who helped shape his early career.
Later in the afternoon, a second plaque was unveiled at Burton’s birthplace home in Pontrhydyfen, ensuring that both mentor and protégé were remembered side by side in the places that defined them.

Community Celebration
The events were the culmination of more than two years of work by the Burton Bont Festival Group, who organised fundraisers, community gatherings, and installations across the village. Their efforts brought together residents, businesses, and supporters to celebrate Burton’s legacy and strengthen community pride.
The Festival Group extended heartfelt thanks to the Jenkins and Burton families for their contributions and support, as well as to local residents, business stakeholders, funders, and all who participated in making the centenary commemorations possible.
A Lasting Legacy
Richard Burton’s name remains synonymous with talent, charisma, and international acclaim. Yet, as these centenary events showed, his story is also deeply rooted in Pontrhydyfen — a village that continues to honour its most famous son.
